I took a walk around the yard to see what’s green,
what’s growing,
and what’s gone.
Green is my new stuff, like the watermelon I planted for the first time this year. I don’t know anything about watermelon except it is one of my favorite snacks with a sprinkle of salt after a long run in the summer. So, I thought I would give it a try. I will try to remember to keep you posted on my progress.
Growing is all over the yard and I had trouble deciding what to post. I may share some of the other pictures through the week. However, I chose the strawberries because I’m curious to see how long they last. Some of the animals believe we plant this yard just for them. I think if I put a camera out I’d find them standing in line on two legs, fanning with paper plates, and complaining about the bugs.
Gone are my peonies. This picture is from last week and still shows them in bloom because who wants to see a dead peony. We use most of them, so there are few of them that hang around turning brown, but it is always like a whispered moment when they bloom; their quiet speaks with intimacy, beauty, and familiar fragrance that then disappears like the heat of breath against your skin. You miss them when they are gone.
